Librarian
The Librarian Fellowship gives librarians the knowledge and skills to
effectively direct consumers to reliable health information. Through the
Fellowship, librarians increase their awareness of patrons seeking
health information and comfort level in discussing difficult health
issues with patrons.
In multiple sessions, librarians are exposed to experts in the
healthcare field, tour various medical libraries and speak with medical
librarians, and learn relationship-building skills. The Fellowship
expands librarians' knowledge of the types and sources of reliable
information on healthcare providers, health conditions and healthcare
quality. In addition, the Fellowship connects librarians' to local
experts in the healthcare field they may use for information validation.
At Fellowship conclusion, Fellows develop and present a model Consumer
Health Reference Interview and each librarian obtains a Consumer Health
Information Specialist certification from the Medical Library
Association.
Using information from the Fellowship, previous Librarian Fellows were
able to update their library systems' consumer health database and
related web information, design a staff training module regarding health
information, and develop community presentations related to accessing
health information. Previous Fellows also maintain a learning network
with their cohort.
Eligibility
Librarians who are interested in healthcare quality and health
information, are willing to spread learnings throughout their
institution, and are willing to continue a learning network with their
cohort are an excellent match for this program.
Implementation
Fellowship implementation format and schedule is customized to the needs
of participating librarians. The Librarian Fellowship is currently in
partnership with the Allegheny County Library Association. Past partners include the Carnegie
Library of Pittsburgh.
