Consumer Health Information Fellowship
The Consumer Health Information Fellowship is established to give public librarians the knowledge and skills needed to direct consumers to reliable health information. This Fellowship is sponsored through a grant by Jewish Healthcare Foundation.
12 hours of Medical Library Association (MLA) on-line continuing education is a part of the curriculum. The completion of each of the four modules meets the requirements for application as a certified consumer health information specialist (CHIS). Clinical simulation learning is utilized to provide an opportunity for the librarians to "practice" skills in researching, reporting, and communicating information to a potential patron.
The Fellows are exposed to experts in health care. They also tour health science libraries and participate in didactic and interactive modules on health related topics. This forum allows participants to share personal experiences, utilize healthcare professionals' expertise and collaborate with health science librarians.
The librarians discover new sources of reliable information about healthcare providers, health conditions and healthcare quality. This program ultimately helped librarians develop guidelines and electronic resources to direct patrons to health related information.
This innovative initiative developed a relationship between the public library and health care industry to better serve the needs of the community in providing accurate health related information.
Eligibility
Librarians who are interested in healthcare quality and health information, are willing to spread learning throughout their institutions and are willing to continue a learning network with their cohort are an excellent match for this program.
