Perfecting Patient CareSM

Perfecting Patient CareSM System, or PPC, is a healthcare transformation model in which patient care is driven by patient need. PPC is based on the premise that tangible improvements in health care are best made at the bedside, as close as possible to the point of care. PPC requires empowerment of workers at all levels, a blame-free environment to enable transparency, and that problems be analyzed and solved in real-time.

PPC embodies the fundamental principles in all the improvement models, however it is unique. PPC is not just an award, a five step process, or a list of strategies. PPC is a philosophy, a culture, and a methodology that offers easy to use principles, rules, tools, and countermeasures to redesign the healthcare system. These easy to use applications ensure every worker can be engaged and take a significant roles in improvement.

Under the PPC approach, practitioners encountering problems or errors identify possible cases and implement countermeasures. These rapid-cycle experiments yield incremental improvements, which become standardized. Waste and errors are eliminated, costs are lowers and care is perfected. PPC holds that perfection is the only tenable goal. Anything less would limit achievement, rather than allowing for continuous improvement.

Through PPC:

  • Work is designed, organized and managed according to patients' needs
  • Direct observation, data collection, and real-time problem solving are conducted at the point of care
  • Care processes are systematically tracked to determine if the best possible patient outcomes are achieved
  • Errors and poor outcomes are opportunities for learning and improvement
  • Faulty systems are the source of errors and poor outcomes
  • Clinical professionals work collaboratively to facilitate experimentation and improvement

PPC is a universal quality improvement model that healthcare institutions can use to create safe and efficient systems no matter where they are in their quality evolution. PPC is effective independently. It is also compatible and complementary to other quality improvement systems such as Lean, Six Sigma and others.
